I'm starting to regret putting a tentacle beast in my comic. I feel like everybody draws them these days, not that it's bad, but eh.. o well.

There's a lot of stuff actually, I started this book back in 2001, it's changed a bunch since then but the plotpoints have always remained fairly consistant, surprisingly (considering how long ago I thought it up.) It's basically an homage to all of my favorite stuff growing up as a kid, so you've got dinosaurs, sea battles, some swashbuckling, axl rose, giant squids, canibals, you name it.

But, now with dead man's chest, I had written scenes that were almost exactly dead on. When I saw the movie I got so pissed, I know I"ve bitched about this before but thinking of it made me so mad! I've had to rewrite a lot of this story just to keep some of it "original". ugh whatever. There's not even supposed to be "pirates" in east coast rising, they were supposed to be argonauts!! or whatever. Not like they sail the Argo, but you know. they are on a quest. And it's not even manga!! ha ha ha i know i bitch about this all the time but it still bugs me. anyway, i write too much...

on to the generic stuff: this is a peek at East Coast Rising 2. I plan to finish it this summer.

I wish there was less time between volumes, but seriously folks, drawing a monthly comic for Vertigo and a graphic novel for Tokyopop (plus doing freelance for Disney!) it's no easy task.

Anyway, I'll keep posting tidbits until I have more news. East Coast Rising was optioned for an animated film recently too, that's cool. There might not be much that comes from it (I've been involved with the film business before, it's hard to make anything go, especially when it's animated.) Oh well! We'll see!! Everyone who hasn't yet, go pick up a copy of the first book! Hah.

I sympathise about your idea that was original becoming not-original by the time you're able to do it. UGH. Hate that.

I have been working on the plot for a comic called Avatar for like...oh...6 years? Now there's some kids cartoon called Avatar: The Last Airbender, so I have to CHANGE EVERYTHING.

UGH.

ANYWAY. I love ECR. I was just reading it on my smoke break. Glad to hear v2 is coming out!

I don't see why an abundance of tentacular distress in popular media should be a problem. I try to celebrate when a fad swings my way. You go years scrounging for the kind of thing that's up your alley, then suddenly it's growin' from trees! Hooray!

Like pirates. I love pirates and ships and high-seas adventure. Suddenly, BOOM it's everywhere and I couldn't be a happier camper. Eventually it will subside, and those of us with a genuine interest will be left with a treasure trove of distilled piratical paraphernalia (as in, only the best of what came out of the pop-culture fad).

Lovecraft has always been just under the surface though, subtly influencing just about every fiction writer with a taste for arcane mystery and adventure. It's funny really, his influence on pop-culture has been as insidious as as the things he wrote about.

Having said all that, I do hear what you're saying. My girlfriend calls it getting brain-robbed, and it's frustrating. My theory is that even if you get brain-robbed, you should go ahead and do your thing anyway, because if it's worth reading (viewing, playing), that quality will raise the story above any cosmetic or otherwise superficial similarities it may have to any other stories.

I get more suspicious when someone's work is similar to another previous work by the same artist/storyteller. One-trick ponies are no fun (unless it's a really badass trick). But when you've got as many creative people in the world as we have, and have had in all of recorded history, some folks are bound to come up with the same shit. Especially if they're drawing from the same or similar sources.

Holy...long. I'm sorry!

As much as I love Pirates of the Caribbean, I'd much rather sit down with my copy of ECR, tentacle beast similarities aside. I'm collaborating with a friend on a comic he's writing the script for, and he's often voiced similar frustrations to me; of having thought up an idea way back when and suddenly seeing it pop up somewhere else. I guess that's just the way of the world, though, annoying as it is. :\

Can't wait for the second volume of East Coast Rising! You're rocking Tokyopop's socks off!
